Tiesto Is God

Exactly a year after my virgin Tiësto experience at Zoukout, I had the chance to see him live again last Saturday night at Heineken Thirst held at Sepang, Malaysia, about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur.

And there is just so much to rave about his raves.

First, his stage set up was gorgeous. The video backdrop played clips with crisp lines, fun topographies, creative displays of lyrics, and random neon designs. The stage’s frame was outlined with epileptic lights, but too bad they didn’t install lasers because that would have made quite a bit of difference to the light show. And amongst all the craziness that was illuminating the stage was Tiësto in a pink T-shirt, waving his hands in the air happily.

His 3-hour set was paced differently from the 2-hour one at Zoukout. Because it was longer, he built it up nicely for the first hour, had a little recess with milder beats in the middle, went harder and more intense for the second half, and pumped it up to “maximal crazy” (in his words) during the last half an hour.

The bunch of us danced our hearts out at every track’s climax, caught our breaths during the lulls, repeating to each other that we were going to die of tiredness, and then went into more crazy fist-pumping and feet stomping when the next drop ensued. I am exceptionally proud and in awe of all our friends (and we ranged from 20s to 50s) for dancing so hard and enjoying the gig from start to end.

And as for his live music, it transcends his recorded tracks by a mother fucking huge leap. I still can’t put a finger on why, technically, he is such a good live DJ. All I can say is that every second of his set is good, and that is something that every other DJ I’ve seen has never achieved. The performances of other DJs have awesome moments and boring ones – Tiesto’s music is just brilliant from the moment he hits the deck until he bows out.

It is only at his raves that I find myself not dancing to the music, but rather, letting the music move my body. You truly “feel the music” at his performances. It is also the only time when I don’t give a damn about annoying the people around me with my crazy dancing. Because honestly, you’re at Tiesto’s gig, and there is really nothing you should be doing other than losing your mind and body do him.
