Bye Bye School

With just 1 module left for university, I can safely say that learning only made up a small bit of university. Out of the 27 modules I’ve taken so far, I’ve only really enjoyed and genuinely learnt a lot from 4 modules. That’s 15% of my entire 4 years of studying.

  1. Person and Society - A fundamental sociology module that opened my mind to poverty, the class systems within societies, the power of institutions, and the deconstruction of people’s mindsets and behaviours.
  2. News Reporting and Writing - Taught by an iron lady, this journalism course polished up my news writing skills, and enabled me to write sharp, accurate stories quickly.
  3. Business Journalism - This specialised journalism course led me to seriously consider business journalism as a career. I also met Thus through this course, and he is the most chilled out yet intelligent lecturer I’ve come across in NTU. I can only hope to meet more people like him in the industry next time.
  4. Final Year Project - Luck was with me when I decided to form a group with Shikin, Maryam, and Amellia; 3 non-dramatic, funny, capable, and smart girls in my course. Besides getting along well, we settled on a topic which, with every interview, further inspires us. We are doing a 10,000-word feature journalism report on lower-income Malays in Singapore. We’re halfway through our project, and I think this assignment will be the best and most memorable piece of work I’ve ever done for university. So I hope it all ends well.

At this point, I’m supposed to say that studies is not everything in college life, and that I walked away with life experiences and made awesome friends. But no. I only made a handful of friends whom I would consider keeping as ‘friends’ on my Facebook profile, and most of the life lessons I’ve learnt during the past 4 years was outside of university life.

It’s sad that I had to go through all that for a fucking piece of paper to prove my academic qualification. I would have fucked this whole uni thing if not for the paper-chase that I was pressured to follow. But I’m glad that I made it through, and this course will soon be over. I definitely hope it’s worth it, and I can’t wait to get my cert from whoever on stage, pose for obligatory photos in the unflattering gown and GTFO. I’m never ever going to enroll into another school unless it’s sponsored and overseas.
